OBJECT LESSONS
Lenten Notebook 2: Prayer
By Fr. Marc Powell
Why tell you this story about things as ordinary as traffic jams and new friends and bumpy airplane
rides?
Because it's really less about these
ordinary things and more about the extra-ordinary truth that it points to. The truth, and a surprising one for Catholics
who seldom wear their identity out in the streets except on Ash Wednesday, is this:
God loves when we pray in public.
Really, he does. He must. Why else would he answer mine so quickly, and with such powerful evangelical effect?
"PRAY UNCEASINGLY" - EVEN WHEN YOU DRIVE
"What's the matter with you,
you idiot, do you have a brain in your head?" This is shouted to me by a business-suited pedestrian so close to my driver's
side window - which I'd just rolled up - that his hot breath and hot anger are fogging it up. We're in the middle
of a crosswalk intersection in downtown Seattle during rush-hour. "Roll down your window, idiot ... roll it down so I
can knock some sense into you!"
I do not
roll it down.
But I do understand his anger,
really I do: the roads were traffic jammed and I'd misjudged the intersection, thinking I had enough green-light time
to get through the crosswalk and to the other side. I ended up stopped midway with my rear end blocking the crosswalk. So
Angry Businessman had to walk around my truck - after giving me a piece of his mind, of course.
"Roll it down, idiot, roll it down!"
Drivers stare. Pedestrians stare.
"Roll it down!"
I remember the number one rule of diffusing road rage: Don't engage, don't engage.
"Roll it down!"
But he was about to punch my window out. And then me!
Don't engage, don't engage. But I can't drive off, escape; I'm wedged in by cars on all sides. What
can I do?
"Roll it ..."
I stroke the rosary crucifix dangling from my rearview mirror.
Ask Mary to pray for me.
And just like that,
Angry Businessman stops yelling. Stares from me to the crucifix. Back to me. And then back to the crucifix. He says "sorry"
and he says it to the crucifix. And then he proceeds to walk around my truck, and on down the street.
The traffic light turns green. The backup clears. And I drive
away.
"PRAY UNCEASINGLY" -
EVEN DARING TO SAY GRACE IN RESTAURANTS
She
stares when I come in, she stares again when I order breakfast and she stares a few times more as I wait for my meal - Did
I forget to comb my hair this morning?
Meal come,
I cross myself, say grace, cross myself again - and she's staring once more. "Are you the new priest over at the
Catholic church?" she asks.
Yes, I am.
"Thought so, you look like your picture (in the local,
very small-town newspaper)."
Oh,
uh-huh.
"But I wasn't sure. Then when
I saw you pray, figured it had to be you, and that it was safe."
Safe?
"You know
- to say ‘hi.'"
Oh. ... Hi.
She says she's Christian too. And likes making new Christian
friends. So she and her breakfast move over to my table and we finish our meals together as new friends.
And as we pay and leave the restaurant, she says she'll keep me in her prayers.
I thank her for that, and say I'll keep her in mine.
"PRAY UNCEASINGLY" - AND PEOPLE WILL WANT TO PRAY WITH YOU
We hit some rough air and I and the rest of the passengers aboard this plane to
San Jose bounce a bit in our seats. A bell "BINGS" and the "PLEASE FASTEN YOUR SEAT BELT" sign glows to
life. More rough air and everyone bounces again and le-e-e-ans to the left with the wind-tossed aircraft.
Time to pray.
Out comes my rosary; I cross myself, kiss the cross and begin to whisper: "I believe in one God, the Father
Almighty, maker of ..."
"Uh, excuse
me ...?" This is a nervous little man sitting across the aisle, and he's gripping his armrest like a cat who knows
that it's Bath Day. "Excuse me, but could you say a decade for me too while you're at it?"
How about we say one together? I ask. For everyone on board?
And we do. We pray. At 30,000 feet. Two people who've
never met before now. Two people brought together by faith. And praying in public.
God loves when we pray in public. Really, he does. He must.

Ash
Wednesday is the start of Lent, a holy season in which we focus on Praying, Fasting and Giving in preparation to
experience the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter. Our foreheads are marked with ashes to remind us of our humility before
God, who alone raises us up to holiness in and through the sacrifice of his only Son: "Remember you are dust, and to
dust you shall return." The ashes are made from blessed and burned palms used in our Palm Sunday Mass of last year. We
both "fast" from large meal portions on Ash Wednesday (eating only one regular-size meal and two smaller
meals that together do not equal the size of the regular-size meal) and "abstain" from eating any meat. We continue
the meat abstinence on every Friday of Lent.
Our Ash Wednesday Masses on Feb. 17 will be at
10a.m. and 7p.m.

HAITI DONATIONS AND IRS TAX RECEIPTS
Thanks to your generosity we are sending a check for $3,000 to the CRS (Catholic Relief Services) Haiti
Earthquake Relief Effort. The manner in which your CRS donation will be recognized for IRS tax purposes has changed from
the original bulletin announcement. Here's why. On January 22, 2010 Congress passed a tax decision that allows donors
to deduct their Haiti donations on either their 2009 or 2010 tax return. This applies only to donations given after January
11, 2010 and before March 1, 2010. Because of this tax decision, you will receive an IRS donation letter/receipt in
the mail. This is the only documentation that you will receive from us. This donation will not be listed on your 2010
year-end IRS Donor Substantiation Report.

DO
YOU REMEMBER...
Do you remember, as a child, having chores to do? And as you got bigger, so did the chores? And
do you remember the "why" of those chores? We were part of a family. Stewardship is the act of doing God's "chores".
Very few of us are called upon to do great things, but we are expected to do small things greatly. Those small things are
God's chores that he asks us to do because we belong to His family. He asked His Son to do the great thing for us, now
He asks us to do the small things ~~~ this is called Stewardship. For which He will bless us greatly. Next weekend, January
16 and 17, you will have the opportunity to talk to people involved in doing some of the small things needed to keep our parish
running. Please come, meet them and, perhaps, join them.
DONOR SUBSTANTIATION LETTER MAILING
The 2009 IRS Donor Substantiation Letters were mailed last Thursday
to those who have made donations to the parish during the past year. If you have questions about the letter or do not receive
one this week and think that you should have gotten one, please call the office during business hours at 567-4149.
EASTER IN NARNIA - can you make soup?
Fr. Marc is trying
to organize a series of Friday night Soup Suppers at the parish this Lent based on the theme "Easter in Narnia",
a reference to writer C.S. Lewis' classic, Chronicles of Narnia. The first task is finding at least 4 parishioners willing
to make soup for the event which will also feature a CD performance of the Lewis Stories for kids & adults to enjoy. If
you would like to make soup, please contact Fr. Marc by calling the office or the rectory.
ADULT STUDY GROUP RESUMES - Sundays at 9:15 in the Quieting Room
The
participants will be exploring Scott Hahn's "Reasons To Believe." The sessions are highly structured with reading
assignments and study questions. Participants will be asked to answer questions before each session and to share some of their
answers during the session as part of the ongoing conversation about Catholic Apologetics and how to understand and explain
our faith. All are welcome.
